Over the last two years, most of my curiosity has been focused on large language models.

I spent a lot of time trying to understand how they work. How training happens, how tokens are generated, and how tiny changes in prompts can shift the outcome. That process gave me a clearer mental model of what these systems can do and where they still fail.

But the more I learned, the more it felt like I was studying the wrong layer of the stack.

The models matter, of course. But the bigger shift seems to be happening in the systems built around them.

From responses to actions

Most AI tools still follow a very simple pattern.

You ask a question. The model gives a response. The interaction ends.

That structure works for quick tasks like summaries, answers, and code snippets. But it has no built in planning, no persistent memory, and no ability to act in the world.

This is where AI agents get interesting.

An agent wraps a reasoning model inside a loop:

  • perceive the environment
  • plan a sequence of actions
  • execute those actions with tools or APIs
  • evaluate the result
  • repeat until the goal is done

The system is no longer just generating text. It is pursuing a goal over time.

A model that responds is a tool. A model that acts becomes a process.

And processes can run continuously, coordinate with other systems, and operate without human input at every step.

What agent systems actually look like

As I explored agent frameworks, I noticed a pattern. Most implementations converge on a similar architecture.

There is usually a reasoning layer, often a large language model, that interprets the current state and decides what to do next.

There is a memory layer that stores and retrieves information across long tasks.

There are tools, which can be web search, code execution, APIs, files, or databases.

And there is an orchestration layer that manages the loop, retries, and failure recovery.

Frameworks like LangChain, AutoGen, CrewAI, and Semantic Kernel are all different attempts to make this pattern practical.

At small scales, this works surprisingly well. But once tasks become long, ambiguous, or heavily dependent on external tools, reliability becomes harder. Agents still fail in ways that are hard to predict.

So the question is not whether the architecture works. It does.

The real question is whether it scales.

The rise of multi agent systems

One direction that keeps pulling my attention is multi agent coordination.

Instead of giving one agent the whole job, you split the work into specialized roles.

A research agent gathers information. A planning agent builds a strategy. An execution agent performs the tasks. A validation agent checks the results.

This pattern is not new. Distributed systems have used similar ideas for decades.

What is new is that language models now act as the reasoning layer inside each node. That means agents can communicate using natural language instead of rigid APIs.

That flexibility makes the system more capable. It also makes it more fragile.

Errors compound across agents. A hallucination in research can flow into planning, and then into execution. The more agents you add, the harder it becomes to trace where things went wrong.

Right now this feels less like a solved engineering problem and more like an open research question.

The infrastructure problem

Agent systems can be expensive.

A single AI query is relatively cheap. But an agent running a multi step process can require repeated tool calls, memory reads, evaluations, and retries. That adds up fast.

If agents become the default interface for digital work, the compute layer underneath them becomes critical infrastructure. And today that infrastructure is still controlled by a small number of large technology companies.

That concentration is not just a policy concern. It is an architectural one.

Decentralized AI networks

While researching AI infrastructure, I started exploring projects that experiment with distributed machine learning networks.

One project that caught my attention is Bittensor.

The idea is simple. Instead of a single company controlling AI systems, Bittensor creates a peer to peer network where participants contribute models and compute power. Participants are rewarded based on the usefulness of their outputs.

Inside the network, there are specialized environments called subnets. Each subnet focuses on a specific type of machine learning task. Validators evaluate outputs and distribute rewards to the models that perform best.

In theory, this creates a competitive market for machine intelligence. Whether that incentive system produces reliable infrastructure at scale is still an open question. But the idea itself is fascinating.

It reframes AI computation not as a centralized service, but as an open economic system.

Where this might be heading

I want to be careful not to overstate anything.

Agents today are still unreliable. They hallucinate. They fail on tasks that seem simple. Long horizon reasoning remains a real challenge.

There is a gap between a research demo and a system you would trust to run autonomously for hours.

But the broader trajectory feels clear.

We are slowly moving from models that generate answers to systems that perform work.

Once that shift happens, the architecture of the internet itself starts to change.

The internet originally connected computers. Then it connected people. The next phase might connect processes.

Agents calling APIs. Agents coordinating with other agents. Autonomous systems running tasks continuously in the background.

If that happens, the most important research questions will not be about model capability. They will be about system design.

How do we build agent infrastructure that is reliable? How do we audit what autonomous systems are doing? How do we safely run large networks of intelligent processes?

I do not think we have good answers to those questions yet.

But I do think they are the right questions to ask now, before the infrastructure becomes too large to redesign.
